Because Its Not Google – discussion
What does “bing” stand for?

Bing, its new, sexy and graphically nice search engine from microsoft. Will the results live up to the fine visuals?
I never knew this and am not 100% sure it’s true but I think it stands to reason. I was told that Microsoft came up with the name “bing” during a survey of its employees. It is supposed to stand for “because it’s not Google”. Take the first letters and you get BING.
Why does “bing” exists?
Microsoft have played around in the search market for many years, During the 90’s Microsoft had a search engine called MSN (Microsoft Search Network). There is still some things hanging around from the days when search was pretty equal between MSN, Yahoo, Lycos, Altavista etc. There were lots of players in the market and everyone started scrambling for dominance. Microsoft introduced MSN messenger and Yahoo also introduced its own messenger. At this point in time everything was looking good for the computer giants Microsoft.
Then Google emerged with what was and still is the best search engine algorithm. The results, speed and simple user interface gained popularity every day until it now became the giant of today. Everybody loved Google, a couple of guys started this, they were not a huge corporation and they had no business in tailoring search to suit them so trust swung towards Google. There was no need at this point for because its not google (bing)
Microsoft and Yahoo were the only real search engines left to fight the mighty Google machine on its quest to become total dominance. Microsoft released a new flavour of its revamped search as “live.com” and Yahoo set about trying to dominate the US search market of which it is still doing very well. Google started to dominate search engine marketing (AdWords, the ads down the right hand side of the search engine results pages) with this movement Yahoo and Microsoft also took this challenge on. However the Google dominance was now raking in millions in profit so it set about playing within other peoples market, namely Microsoft.
Google release a free email system, a full web based office suit, chat applications, places to host your own website and more recently a social system named “buzz”. Google has taken aim at Microsoft trying to steal users from its hotmail platform and its totally dominant Office suite (word, excel, PowerPoint), and to be honest it has done very well. As people become more comfortable saving their documents in the “cloud” it is gaining momentum all of the time.
Not content with taking the search market and office dominance from Microsoft, Google has recently moved into mobile phone software which is gaining ground on Apples iPhone and Microsoft’s windows mobile operating systems and guess what it’s not doing bad at all and Google is leveraging it’s huge corporate appeal with mobile manufactures to push the “android” operating system to as many handsets as possible. To really try to put the nail in the coffin Google has recently announced that it is going to be releasing an operating system called “chrome OS” the same name as the browser you can use from Google.
Some people at this point in time were becoming restless with the Google train and it wouldnt be long before the market would be crying out for a search engine that did not belong to Google. In an early incubation phase because its not google (bing) was born.
So here is the problem now for Google
Google’s squeaky clean image during its rapid growth is now beginning to become tarnished, there is a growing feeling that Google are infringing on privacy and it now has the corporate mentality and desire to take over the word. Was now the right time for because its not google (bing)? Google seems to be playing or will become players in every single technology related item. Which of course is where Microsoft was all of those years ago. With Google basically crushing Yahoo and Live search engines they have joined forces in search engine marketing. With the growing concern that people do not want to use just Google for everything the term “bing” was born. Now ladies and gentlemen we give you because its not google (bing).
People are happy to join the because its not google (bing) following because people just do not like dominance and Google are heading straight for world domination. Do I like it? Probably I am happy at the moment with Google I like the applications they create and although the search algorithm is being found out and manipulated a little it still brings me the best results for search and I do love the chrome browser.
What will happen in the future?
Hey, I do not have a crystal ball but everything on this earth goes round in circles, the mighty get mighty and then they fall. Then they come back. I actually think that Google has its spidery fingers in many pies at the moment and some shrewd management will need to take precedence over expansion to keep the Google train moving. If we take the train analogy I can see Google is not at top speed yet but its acceleration has started to drop. It’s good news for everyone that Yahoo and Microsoft are sharing some knowledge to try and take the fight to Google with because its not google (bing), however they have tried and failed on many occasions.
Perhaps it’s time for a new player in the market, the only way you can get into the search engine game is going to be providing useful features or specifying a particular category to dominate first and then expand. As a search engine lives and dies depending on its ability to return relevant results anyone trying to catch up Google in this market space has a long way to go. It has been estimated that Google have spent nearly 2.6 billion hours of research using very clever people to get this far. It is certainly not going to be easy.
This was a short story on how because its not google (bing) was formed.
